Frequently Asked Questions About Relationship Challenges

This page answers common questions about counselling for relationship difficulties — with partners, family or friends. If you are unsure whether support is right for you, you are welcome to book a free introductory call so we can talk it through together.

How do I know if relationship counselling could help?
If communication often breaks down, conflicts repeat, trust feels fragile, or you feel lonely, unseen or overwhelmed in a relationship, counselling can help you understand patterns, express needs safely, and make clearer choices.
Do you work with couples or individuals?
I offer individual counselling focused on your experience of relationships. Many people find it helpful to explore their patterns, boundaries and choices individually, whether they stay in the relationship or not. If specialist couples therapy is needed, I can signpost you.
What happens in a relationship-focused session?
We map what’s happening now, explore past experiences that influence your patterns, and practise practical skills such as calm communication, boundary-setting and self-soothing. You choose the pace and what feels most useful each week.
Can counselling help us communicate without arguing?
Yes. We look at triggers, body signals and escalation cycles, then build tools for pausing, listening, and speaking needs clearly. You’ll learn simple frameworks you can use in real conversations outside sessions.
What about rebuilding trust after hurt or betrayal?
Healing trust takes time and consistent actions. Therapy supports you to process emotions, set boundaries, agree realistic steps for repair, and decide what you need to feel safe — including the option of ending the relationship if that’s right for you.
Can you help if I’m considering separation?
Yes. We can think through your options, prepare for honest conversations, and plan practical and emotional support. If separation is chosen, therapy can help you navigate grief, co-parenting and rebuilding confidence afterwards.
Do you work with attachment styles and people-pleasing?
I frequently support clients with anxious or avoidant patterns, fear of abandonment, difficulty saying no, and caretaking dynamics. We focus on self-worth, nervous system regulation, and practising healthy boundaries in small, doable steps.
Can counselling help with family or friendship difficulties?
Yes. We can explore intergenerational patterns, role expectations, and conflict with parents, adult children, siblings or friends. You’ll develop tools for limits, requests, and protecting your wellbeing while staying aligned with your values.
What if my partner won’t come to therapy?
Individual work can still create meaningful change. By adjusting your responses, clarifying needs and boundaries, and caring for yourself, the dynamic often shifts — and you’ll be clearer about next steps either way.
Is online counselling effective for relationship issues?
Yes. Many clients value the privacy and flexibility of online sessions. We can practise communication and boundary tools that you can use immediately in everyday situations at home or work.
What can I expect in a first session?
The first session is a chance to get to know each other. You can share what has brought you to counselling, and we can explore whether my approach feels like a good fit for you.
How long is a session and how often do we meet?
Sessions are 50 minutes. Many clients meet weekly at a regular time, although we can discuss a rhythm that works for you.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, with the standard exceptions around serious risk of harm or legal obligations. I explain confidentiality fully in our first meeting so you know exactly how your information is protected.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can contact me directly to book an introductory call or a first session.
Do you offer in-person and online sessions?
Yes. I offer in-person sessions in Norwich and online counselling via Zoom across the UK.
